From 30th July to 6th August, 7 Scouts and two leaders attended Kent International Jamboree, held near Sevenoaks. There were around 2,500 Scouts and leaders at the event from around the world, including some from Nigeria, Ghana and the USA. The Scouts took part in many activities, including woggle making, glass engraving, sailing, canoeing, power boating, climbing, abseiling, prusiking, archery and sub aqua.
They performed a sketch at our subcamp camp fire in front of about 200 people. The sketch went down very well and prompted comments for some time afterwards! During a day in London, we visited the Science Museum, Baden Powell House and the Natural History Museum, where some of us managed to see the new moving dinosaur exhibition. Other highlights included our subcamp day, when all 600 of us started the day by sitting down to breakfast together and went on to hold a Victorian themed village fayre before learning circus skills.
Not all the Scouts got to take part in all the activities however; on only our second day on camp, ten year old Luke fell off a log whilst waiting for dinner and suffered a double compound fracture of the right forearm. He proceeded to spend the next five days in hospital! Luke's unfortunate experience apart, KIJ was a great and memorable event for those Scouts who took part.
All 7 Scouts earned the Global Challenge Award and several Outdoor Challenge, Outdoor Plus Challenge and Nights Away badges were also earned.
